Da tutela à luta pela autonomia
Políticas e direitos da pesca artesanal no Brasil
Abstract
This essay aims to explore the historical relationship between Brazilian fishermen and the state, given the significance of artisanal fisheries for family livelihoods, ways of life, and cultural practices in numerous communities across the country. By analyzing government policies and fishing regulations, we can obtain a better understanding of how fishermen and fisherwomen have become subjects of state policies and formulated their fight for rights. Over time, government fishing policies have taken various directions. Recently, the integration of fishing policies with environmental protection policies has emerged as a crucial strategy to sustain traditional ways of life associated with artisanal fishing. The examination of state policies and fishermen's political organizations is further enhanced by the perspectives of three influential leaders who actively fought for the recognition of fishermen's rights in Brazil.
