Abstract

This paper starts from the trajectory of the sociological studies about virility, in which the sport is closely connected with the value given to the masculine. Since the early civilizations to this day, the resignification of what is virility goes through sports. It takes into account the work of relevant authors, that created the basis for the comprehension that gender is a social construct, that also reflects the context in which an individual is inserted. With this reading of the past, searching for answers to the present, and to the future, this paper intends to find pathways to a new perspective about virility and the masculine in Brazil. This perspective goes through the media coverage and the way how the stories of Brazilian football are told and how the athletes and their performances are value in relation to masculinity. In this process, an articulation is made between the concepts of virility and Brazilian football, in order to pave the way for future readings on the intersection of these issues.
