Abstract

The punishment theme appears like a scarcely studied field in the national academic literature. Traditional researches tend to focus on four main axial themes: inquisition, slavery, police institutions and the penitentiary system, in a minor scale. By doing so, they try to map the multiple "standards of consensually permitted violence culture widespread all over the society institutions, the religious and judiciary ones there included" (BRETAS, 2009, p.20). Our purpose is to insert into this discussion the approach suggested by the sociology of punishment, reflecting about the disciplinary processes which established the order notion in the colonial society.
