The Gymnasio of Bahia:
an elitist knowledge space?
Abstract
In the light of Cultural History, the documentary research sought to historicize the institutionalization of the Gymnasio of Bahia, which was built in order to meet the political and educational desires of a Bahia elite, reflecting on the discourses of the subjects that circulated in newspapers and books around the institution as a cult space of knowledge, popularly known as “place of prizes and awards”. The analysis of the creation and the institutional path allows us to think about the Bahian context and its population in formation via the defense of secondary education as a condition of prestige, distinction, and social belonging.
