Abstract

In an attempt to understand its reasons, I tried to unveil the phenomenon: not liking Mathematics. The objetives were: to investigate the meaning of learning Mathematics for students who don’t like it and to understand the phenomenon of not liking Mathematics in order to propose alternatives to teaching of this subject that can improve it. The phenomenon was studied from the point of view of the interviewed students. There are several reasons which explain the phenomenon. Among such reasons, the students emphasise the lack of relationship between the Mathematics of life and school Mathematics, that is, the fact that there is no place for the Matematics of life in school and that the school Mathematics has no life. This lack of relationship, the contents, the teachers - the relationships they establish with the students, the way they teach and evaluate - have resulted in a great deal of difficulties and fear of learning Mathematics on the part of the students, besides producing deep scars originated by the pressure and the oppression that are present in the process of teating/learning this subject.
