Abstract
The objective of this paper is to re-think the nature of pedagogy and, consequently, the nature of school teaching. The intention is to show how the analysis of teachers´ work, from the point of view of its different components, tensions, and dilemas, allows for a better understanding of the schools´ pedagogic practice. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part proposes a definition of pedagogy based on the analysis of teachers´s work, trying, at the same time, to identify certain important conceptual consequences. The second, approaches the study of teachers´ work process from the point of view of its purposes, object and product. The third part tries to define the nature of teaching technologies and their impact upon pedagogy. The last and fourth part analyses the role of teachers in the process of school work and a number of implications of their professional activity. Through these different aspects, we propose a definition of pedagogy as ¨human interaction technology¨, emphasizing, at the same time, the question related to the epistemological and ethical dimensions that underly the task of working with human beings. We intend, thus, to contribute to the construction of a theory of teachers´work and pedagogy.
