RETHINKING SEXUAL EDUCATION AS A “CROSS-CURRICULAR THEME”

Abstract

This paper presents some aspects concerning the introduction of sexual education in schools by The National Curriculum Guidelines. It is based on the analysis of the criteria that marked its election as a cross-curricular theme, the implications of the criteria and its social and historical implications as well as the difficulties involved in such introduction. The author also discusses the potential contributions of teaching sexuality as a “cross-curricular theme” and the factors or mechanisms that may turn feasible its application.
