Abstract

This paper has the purpose of bringing to light some foundational elements related to the establishment of the Faculty of Education as the responsible institution for teacher formation at the Federal University of Pelotas. In order to achieve such an aim, the lecturers of the Research Line in Teacher Formation, at the Postgraduate Program, promoted a search on the Faculty's memory, helped by one of the protagonists of the initial project of this institution, Prof. Maria Isabel da Cunha. This overview presents the impressions and knowledge about the experience of forming teachers from the perspective of this protagonist combined with that of these lecturers. Such a move led to the perception that, during its 30 years of existence, FaE has been inhabited by a kind of knowledge full of movement, differences and complexities, which expose the imaginary and archetypical roots that are still being reflected on our conceptions and practices.
