Abstract

This article addresses the issue of workers in slavery and freedom (1863-1905), in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The sources to be used are the book of baptism of captives of this city (1863-1873) and a photo of the workers of the railroad of 1905. such, but to show that the black population was part of the local working class in both historical periods, both in slavery and in freedom. And also to demonstrate that it is possible to work with this theme even in the “southern confines.”
