Abstract

The emancipationist achievements of the 1870s point out to interesting approaches of research on compulsory labor. The updating of the manorial logic, in attempt to control and exploit the working class, depended on the construction of a surveillance apparatus on the means of obtaining property, only legitimized by work. In this sense, it is possible to analyze the requests for freedom through an annuity obtained through a third party, to discuss the social meanings involved in the debts contracted by freed workers, mainly involved in the guarantee of work. The prohibition of the liberality of a third party in obtaining an annuity will be analyzed as a way of controlling the manorial class in the exploitation of work.
