Abstract

This article aims to identify what the layers of memory left by the Portuguese immigration in Caxias do Sul/RS between the decades of 1910 to 1950 are constituted of. It is problematized that there is a consolidated narrative in the city from the point of view of the Italian immigrants and their descendants, without too much attention given to other groups that took part in the formation of the city. The Portuguese presence is evidenced in this article through newspapers and interviews, with the objective to chart the group’s cultural practices and sociabilities. It is considered that the memory has a decisive function in existence and it interferes in present representations.
