Abstract

Artisanal fishing for aviú (Acetes marinus) is one of the main productive activities practiced by riverside people in the municipality of Cametá, in the Pará Amazon. Thus, the research aimed to analyze and characterize the artisanal aviú fishing and its contributions to the life of the riverside inhabitants of Ponta do Luciano de Cametá Tapera. Methodologies such as participant observation, non-directive interviews and application of semi-structured questionnaires were used in the work. The research demonstrates that fishermen and fisherwomen have rich knowledge about fishing, obtained through coexistence and relationship with nature. The activity is carried out by trawling on the left bank of the Tocantins River, between May and June. They use aviú cloth as a tool, in addition to buckets, panniers and plastic bags, which are utensils used to pack the aviú. Fishing is more productive during dark nights and low tide, and after fishing, the aviú undergoes processing, which can be fried or dried. The activity is characterized by the transmission of knowledge that refers to the teachings of ancestors and still resists to the present day.
