Abstract

This work seeks to reflect on the varied knowledge of women who work in the artisanal fishing production chain, in dialogue with their schooling experiences and the possibilities of non-formal education. The focus is on the daily lives of women from six communities in the municipality of Cabo Frio/RJ. The study has a qualitative character and adopted as methodological procedures the performance of semi-structured interviews recorded and fully transcribed, as well as direct observation and photographic records, generating documents that were later analyzed (GIL, 2008). The interviewees' reports evidenced a strong female fishing culture that is found within their families across generations. This knowledge is perpetuated through informal education and concentrates the cultural richness, the sustenance of women and their families and their social groups. School knowledge does not stand out in the interviewees' routine, where low schooling prevails. There is knowledge acquired outside the domestic and school environment, typical of non-formal education, which contributes to the search for social rights.
