This paper intends to reflect, from two ethnographics cases, on how social identity of artisanal fishermen is constructed in two national contexts: Portugal and Brazil. Portuguese case was observed in a little fishermen village called Carrasqueira located on the central coast of the country. The brasilian ethnography, instead, was performed in Marambaia Island located on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro state. Ethographic information indicate how this social identities – as marked by dedication to fishing groud craft – are operated and in what way they are recognized by national states and social groups they self.
