Abstract

This article seeks to contribute to the characterization of Brazilian political culture from the particular perspective of contemporary Brazilian cinema. In the context of mass-media
societies marked by visuality, films transmit discourses that prescribe certain ways of understanding and acting for people in the world, making their study scientifically relevant. For this reason, the present research sought to identify cinematic discourses in Brazilian cinema, focusing on representations of social conflicts and how they participate in the broader process of political subjectivation, particularly in the post-recommencement (pós-retomada) period (2004-2019). To this aim, seven films belonging to the period were examined by means of discourse analysis, paying special attention to the interpretative repertoires and visual representations prevalent in them. The research allowed us to identify discourses in which social actors take the form of pragmatic individuals, who engage in daily struggles for recognition, with ineffective mediations and amidst a markedly atomized and hostile society.
