BLACK WOMAN IN WORK OF CARE AND DOMESTIC IN BRAZIL

Abstract

This article discusses the centrality of black women in the social and political organization of care in Brazil, based on the stratification of the provision and distribution of care and domestic work at intersection of race, gender and class. The analysis is based on the conception of care as work that is constitutive of human sustainability and a mainstay of the capitalist mode of production. The preliminary result is that the social organization of care in Brazil is historically anchored in the exploitation and expropriation of black women in care and domestic work. It also points out some of the challenges of placing care on the Brazilian public agenda.
