Abstract

The paper has as its main research question whether in federal models the capitals of federated entities have the type of federal capital as a reference or, on the contrary,
they adopt a model of greater centralization, behaving internally as unitary states. To
answer this question, the Canadian Local Government system is studied. The centrality
position of the capitals of the Canadian Provinces is also analyzed, proposing a centrality
index adapted to the municipal model of this country and applying it to both the provincial capitals and the federal capital, Ottawa, in order to fnd similarities or differences
between them.
