Abstract

The present article introduces education, in general, and public education, in particular, as elements of the modern civilising process. I start by defining civilisation and remarking its growth/development in the modernity. I show the importance of the Enlightenment thought to the shaping of a western civilising project, with its ideas regarding progress, reason, civilisation, and also education, place to which the concepts of the philosophers of the Enlightenment shift. Finally, I highlight the constitution of a certain notion of public sphere and the formation of public education as unique creation of the modernity.
