Abstract

This study analyses the implications of the study of television on the training and the practice of educators. It draws from written testimony of teachers who attended the course “TV in the School and Today’s Challenges” and from a survey conducted with 61 public school teachers and 117 elementary and high school students in Brazil’s Federal District. In the quantitative data analysis, it was verified that teachers prefer informative TV programs, either for their own knowledge or for use in the classroom. In their statements, teachers declared that the study of TV makes them more confident to introduce in their teaching practice other genres of programs that their students normally watch. They also indicated their personal satisfaction in having domestic reception a locus of thinking about TV. In conclusion, knowledge of TV can help the teacher promote a more effective apprenticeship in the classroom, and also make TV an object of reflection in their daily familiar habit of watching it.
