"A PALAVRA", A CATHOLIC JOURNAL IN PELOTAS
Aspects Regarding the Catholic Church and Education at the Beginning of the 20th Century
Abstract
Since the nineteenth century, and fundamentally in the first decades of the twentieth century, the Catholic Church fought the secularization and also the political, social and cultural movements that advocated this idea. In this context, the Church in Pelotas was concerned about the clerical activities and those related to education, linked to the propagation of the “good press” (which the main vehicle was the periodical “A Palavra”), to the creation of schools opened to various society classes and to the creation of political societies that faced certain society segments and that offered resistance to its performance.
