Abstract

This paper deals with the evaluation of public policies and social programs, focusing on the effectiveness of Student Assistance Policy of Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Piauí (IFPI), in regard to the reduction of dropout and retention rates among those registered at Central Teresina Campus. For this purpose, based on National System of Professional and Technological Education Information (SISTEC) data, provided by the Pro-Rectory of Educational Studies (PROEN), it compares the rates of the first year of policy implementation with those of previous years. It was observed that, during most of the period, examined year by year, there was a decrease in retention and dropout rates, meaning that student assistece policy has been effective in fulfilling one of its objectives as a public policy in the field of professional education in Piauí.
