Abstract

The present article seeks to lay a foundation of a pedagogical experience carried out among students enrolled in a course of Education in Universidade Federal Fluminense, taking into account the gravity of contemporary socio-environmental crisis. Assuming that such crisis expresses the unsustainability of present standards of production and consumption of material and symbolic goods, we have aimed to identify and work with the students‟ social representations about the relations between nature and human societies, and notions related to environment, sustainability, and socio-environmental risks and impacts. In order to discuss the limits and critical possibilities of the representations elaborated by the students, we have resorted to studies related to the field of Environmental History, exploring its contributions so that we may understand the historical roots of the present crisis, considering past natural environments, human ways of production, as well as ways of thought.
