Abstract

The traditional people from the Peninsula of Juatinga face environmental conflicts arising from the different modes of use and appropriation of the territory. Given the economic development model that was established in the Paraty city, school education became necessary as an objective condition of existence for these people. The lack of schools have brought a number of difficulties to these people. Thus, the aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between their struggle for the traditional territory and the access to formal education. From an exploratory stage, through observation and participation in activities, meetings and public consultations related to territorial conflicts and educational issues in the city of Paraty, it is possible to affirm, as a preliminary result, that the fight of the traditional people for education is embedded in the context of resistance and confrontation to the social domination and environment injustice.
