The purpose of this article is to reflect critically on the characteristics of the scientific-technological professional courses vocational education in Portugal and point out some lines of action that contribute for the educational success of this type of education. The school failure in vocational education at the secondary level is the result of a set of causal relationships which interact in its development. Methodologically, the data were collected through questionnaires provided to students and teachers from vocational education, and through interviews with the directors from different professional courses in three secondary schools within the Porto district. The correlational analyzes and contingencies showed various interdependencies in the development of school failure, noting that out of the 638 students that are attending vocational education, 249 accumulate withholdings of modules. The success rate of students starting in 2007/2008 and completion in 2009/2010 is very low.
