Abstract

This article presents a study about the singing discipline existent in the curriculum of Pelotas German School in the four first decades of the twentieth Century, as a strategy for the preservation of the Germanism and the German language having the School Reports from the German School from 1913 and 1923, statutes of the German School from 1915, the songbook "Es tonen die Lieder…" (Songs sound…) by Wilhelm Schlüter from 1931, as well as interviews with four students as the main sources of this research. The music has corresponded to a genuine form of transmission of a logos and an ethos by interpretating songs in which centenary values and traditions were disseminated through words sung in German and in Portuguese language, contributing to the formation of a singular identity of the German-Brazilian students in the previously mentioned locus.
