Abstract

Based on research results that aimed at analyzing the uses and objectives of the Exame Nacional de Ensino Medio (ENEM), this article discusses the Exam's role within the National Assessment System, its possible social impacts and its use as an instrument of access to Higher Education. To this end, bibliographic and official documents were analyzed and interviews about ENEM were made. Among the results, we highlight the contradictions related to the use of the Exam's grade, mainly to access Higher Education, questioning whether ENEM, in fact, favors the democratization of vacancies in federal public universities, historically very disputed.
