Abstract

This study introduce reflections about of a Mathematics work whose hypothesis is the teaching of algebra in the perspective of a meaningful learning. It is concerned with analyzing the ways algebra may come to help young people to better understand the world around them. In applying a different methodological practice to the teaching of equations of the first degree, we propitiated a look over the possibility of thinking the teaching from a standpoint that enlarges the perspective of scientific rationality. The experience has involved teacher and students of a 6th grade class of na Elementary School in Pelotas, RS. We attempted at challenging them to think about a new logic in Math teaching, one that respects differences and pursues another type of relationship in the Math classroom. Results were promising, which indicates the possibility of rethinking the teaching of algebra in elementary school. The reflections following these results may come to constitute a reference to the analysis of teaching and of Math teachers’ formation as well.
